How Open Learning helped Wesley land a higher-level public sector role
For Wesley, the road to career advancement wasn’t straightforward. After completing his Accounting Diploma at Douglas College, he quickly realized that not having an undergraduate degree was holding him back from landing higher-level positions in the public sector.
“I honestly didn’t think I’d go back to school,” Wesley admits. “But when I started applying for more senior roles, I quickly realized that not having an undergraduate degree was holding me back. Instead of dwelling on it, I decided to take it as an opportunity to grow.” That opportunity led him to enrol in TRU Open Learning’s Bachelor of Commerce program.
Balancing a full-time job, school, and life wasn’t easy. Wesley admits he faced burnout and personal challenges that took a toll on him mentally and emotionally. “I used to jump from one assignment to the next without rest, which led to burnout — and honestly, it affected my personal relationships too. That was a wake-up call, and I’ve since made it a priority to find balance.”

Finishing his degree not only helped Wesley advance his career but also brought a sense of closure. “On a personal note, I used to have recurring dreams about finishing my degree — like it was unfinished business — and now those dreams have finally stopped,” Wesley shares. “That, to me, says a lot.”
Wesley’s journey shows how accessible, flexible education can empower mid-career learners to overcome barriers, find balance, and take the next step toward their goals.
